As summer temperatures soared across Mississippi this year, one utility company took significant steps to ensure its most vulnerable customers could stay cool without breaking the bank. Entergy Mississippi, serving nearly half a million customers across 45 counties, implemented a comprehensive $650,000 assistance program aptly named “Beat the Heat.”
More Than Just Bill Assistance
The initiative, launched in summer 2024, went beyond simple financial aid. While bill payment assistance formed a crucial component, the program took a holistic approach to energy affordability:
- Over 200 electric fans were distributed free of charge
- 650 energy efficiency kits were given out, containing:
- LED lightbulbs
- Advanced power strips
- Bathroom faucet aerators
- Weather-stripping materials
“We understand the economic difficulties many are experiencing, and we are here to help,” said Robbie Kemp, Entergy Mississippi’s vice president of customer service. “Our commitment is to be there for our customers, especially during extreme temperatures.”
Community Impact
The majority of the funding—more than $641,000—was channeled through The Power to Care program, which specifically targets older adults and customers with disabilities. This money came from a combination of Entergy shareholders, employees, and customer donations.
The company also organized a large-scale customer engagement event, providing assistance to over 400 customers. Services at this event included:
- Energy bill management guidance
- Distribution of energy efficiency kits
- Pro bono legal aid
- Establishment of Kids to College savings accounts
Digital Innovation in Assistance
In a nod to modern solutions, Entergy Mississippi provided free access to Single Stop, an online platform that connects households in need with various forms of financial assistance. This digital approach complemented traditional assistance methods, making it easier for customers to find and access available resources.
Long-term Solutions
Beyond immediate relief, the program emphasized sustainable solutions. Grants totaling over $9,000 were awarded to provide home weatherization kits, and the company made donations to local organizations specifically for home weatherization projects for customers in need.
Corporate Responsibility in Action
This initiative is part of Entergy’s larger commitment to community support. Since 2018, the corporation has delivered more than $100 million annually in economic benefits to local communities through various programs, including philanthropy, volunteerism, and advocacy.
As a Fortune 500 company serving 3 million customers across four states, Entergy’s focused effort in Mississippi demonstrates how large utilities can make a meaningful difference in their communities, especially during challenging weather conditions.
